Farming Tutorials
Provided is a list of topics to help get you up to speed on the basics of farming!
Planting & Harvesting
In order to plant a crop, you will need:
- A seed
- A block that the seed can grow on
- Enough farming skill to plant the seed
- Enough of the correct light for the seed to be able to grow
If you have these four things, you can place the block and then plant the seed in it.
Note: some crops require being sown into the underside of the block.
Given enough time, the crop will grow to maturity and, once ready to harvest, it will say "Ready to Harvest" in flashing letters.
All it takes to harvest a crop is to deal damage to it using any tool, including a tiller. The crop will break and there's a chance it will drop seeds and/or resources.
Lighting
For a crop to grow, it needs the correct amount, and type of, light.
For most crops (all the organic ones) this can be provided by either daylight or by gleamlight.
In the case of inorganic crops, daylight will prevent them from growing until it is blocked out. They must be grown exclusively by gleamlight.
The amount of light provided will also affect growth times. For crops completely exposed to daylight, this isn't an issue and the crop will always grow at the maximum rate possible (even at night).
For crops growing via gleamlight, you must ensure that the gleam is both bright and plentiful enough to sustain proper growth, otherwise growth times may be dramatically increased. Aim to use brighter gleams to make sure they are sufficiently lit.
Yield & Seed Chance
All non-prestige crops come with both a Seed Chance and a Yield Chance, which are displayed as a percentage when you look at the planted crop.
When a crop is fully grown, ready to harvest and you break the crop, these are the numbers that will determine if (and how many) seeds and crop resources will drop and are calculated individually.
If the number is below 100%, there is a chance you may not get a seed/resource.
If the number is exactly 100% then you will always get a seed/resource.
If the number is above 100%, 150% for example, then you will always get a seed/resource with (in this case) a
50% chance of receiving a second one.
Ways to modify these numbers include:
- Conditional blocks
- Conditional liquids
- Planting in tilled soil
- Farming Epic (only applies to Yield Chance)
Growth Times
Once a crop is planted and starts growing, you will see an Expected time to Maturity when you look at the crop. To be more accurate, this is more of an “estimated” time until maturity; the reason being that crop growth is heavily influenced by RNG factors.
Every in-game day (24 minutes by default) each individual crop will have a chance of progressing to the next stage of its growth with the original Expected time representing the odds; the higher the original time, the less likely it is to grow. As of right now, there is also no “forced growth” meaning it’s entirely possible (though highly unlikely) for a crop to just not grow. If you wish to increase your odds, the only way is to use fertilizer.
Fertiliser
Fertiliser is used to give your crops a chance of reaching their next stage of maturity sooner. When it is applied to a growing crop, and that crop is calculating if it will mature to the next stage, it will have a higher chance of succeeding the check. At the same time, regardless of whether the crop matures by a stage, there is also a chance that the fertiliser on the crop will be removed.
Fertilisers come in two different grades, those being Mulch and High-Octane. Mulch can only be applied to basic crops while High-Octane can be applied to any crops, though it’s best to only use it for the inorganic and prestige crops that actually need it as it doesn’t provide any more benefits than Mulch.
Fertiliser can also be applied to prestige crops to prolong the time it takes before they wither.
Growth Conditions
By setting up your farm correctly, it is possible to change the seed and yield chances, as well as the growth time. These conditions come in four different forms:
- Not submerged in a liquid. Currently there is only one crop that has this condition, and for it to be applied it requires the crop to not be submerged in a specific liquid. Conversely, submerging it in the specific liquid will have the opposite effect.
- Being planted in a specific block. Most crops can be planted in a variety of blocks, some require tilling first and some don’t, but each different block will usually apply different effects.
- Being planted in the range of a liquid. Most crops will be affected from being planted near a specific liquid that they like. These effects are never negative, thus should always be aimed for.
- Being planted in the range of a block. All non-prestige blocks can be affected by having specific blocks within their range. The same block can affect multiple crops, just as the same crop can be affected by multiple blocks; though there is always a maximum number of blocks a crop can be affected by.
You should always plan out your farm to meet the conditions that maximise what you’re trying to get. If you want the most seed chance possible, it will be at the cost of yield and vice-versa. Except for goo, it is always possible to have a 100% seed chance with a crop but that will nearly always provide less yield so go with what works for you.
Growth Condition Ranges
Conditions 3 and 4 require the crop to be planted within range of either a liquid or block (which is sometimes air) in order to get the effects. To be within range, the liquid or block must be within three horizontal blocks from the block that the crop is planted in. Block effects do not travel vertically, nor do they count if they are on the same altitude as the crop itself. As far as liquids go, they can be placed in chiselled blocks, even as small as a 1/8 chisel, and they will still meet the condition. This means you could even save space by chiselling the blocks that meet the block conditions you want and placing the liquids inside the chiselling.
Prestige Crops
Prestige crops are a little different from the resource crops in that they have a seed and yield chance of 0% and there is no way to increase it. They also, as the name suggests, provide prestige to whatever beacon they’re planted in once they are fully grown. On top of this, however, these crops will also wither over time and once withered will stop providing the prestige.
Faster Planting & Harvesting
If you want to plant faster, there are two things you can do. The first is to increase your Dexterity Attribute and the second is to use Fast Brews. As of the time of this writing, there is no tool that can assist with faster planting.
If you want to harvest quicker, using a tool forged with some level of Adjacent Block/AoE, the more crops you can hit at once the faster things will go. Be careful not to use a tool powerful enough that it might break other blocks around your farm if you miss.
